Mayfield Suspended
If you have been following the goings-on of NASCAR, then by now you have heard about Jeremy Mayfield’s suspension. The suspension made NASCAR news headlines after it was made known in the Darlington Raceway. Mayfield was not suspended alone; so were two members from other teams. .
Not long before the Darlington announcement, Mayfield had also tested positive for drug use. Despite that, officials allowed Mayfield to continue racing. Insiders point out it was because results from Mayfield’s second drug test were still pending. On top of the suspension, Mayfield’s ownership of Mayfield Motorsports was also taken away.
At the current time, Mayfield maintains all he took was OTC allergy medications combined with one prescription medication, which, in turn, caused him to flunk his drug tests. At present, Mayfield’s case is awaiting further ruling from NASCAR officials. While Mayfield is not allowed to drive in the next race, J.J. Yeley will act as interim driver. At the same time, Mayfield’s wife will officially be considered team owner.
Not surprisingly, the Mayfield case made a lot of people curious. Verily, people wanted to know the specific drugs Mayfield got suspended for. “The first thing is, there should not be a mystery out. This should be public knowledge,” says 2002 NASCAR rookie Ryan Newman.
Newman did not discuss whether or not he thought Mayfield guilty; but he did reveal concerns about the situation. “I don’t know the whole story for what’s happened. Knowing what the penalty is, knowing what caused the situation is extremely important,†he points out“I don’t know the whole story for what’s happened. Knowing what the penalty is, knowing what caused the situation is extremely important,†he adds.
Another racer, Kurt Busch, also expressed concern about the vagueness of NASCAR regulations on drug use and testing. When I go into a drug testing scenario, we don’t know what the outcome can be because we don’t know what they’re testing for. It’s very open-ended…I like it (the drug testing policy), and I don’t like it at the same time,†Busch points out.
Brian Vickers and other drivers worry the absence of regulations will become a thorny issue later on. In particular, “I am afraid to take my multi-vitamin…Because you call them (NASCAR) and ask them ‘is this multi-vitamin ok?’ And their response is ‘well, I think it is, but if it tests positive, there’s nothing we can do about it’,†he avers.
Every NASCAR driver is a certified pro at racing and driving. Making them hesitate over something as simple as taking multi-vitamins is unnecessary and wrong. The only real answer to this problem is to force NASCAR to release a list of banned drugs, as well as reveal the drugs that triggered Jeremy Mayfield’s suspension. In so doing, all the questions resulting from this NASCAR news will be answered.
